Cars In Review: 2022 Honda Accord
The Honda Accord has a history that dates back all the way to 1976 when it was first introduced. Since then, it has received many awards and seen many facelifts to get it to what it looks like for 2022. In my personal opinion, Honda is one company that makes some really nice cars and really does a good job of leading the industry with the number of top safety rating car picks among all the others.
The 2022 Honda Accord pricing ranges anywhere between $27,615 and $39,545 and comes in 9 different colour options. In comparison to the 2021 model year, not much has changed. The only difference is, it is now available in a Sport model trim that is replacing the EX hybrid. Another important note is this car is no longer available in a 6 speed manual transmission, as it now comes in a 10 speed option.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The 2022 Accord has really changed the engine lineup for it’s model year and the results are positive. Replacing the previous generation’s V6 and naturally aspirated four cylinder engine with smaller turbo fours was probably one of the best decisions made. Who knew downsizing could really have its benefits?
The LX (base model) features a turbocharged 1.5 litre four cylinder engine under the hood that allows the vehicle to make 192 horsepower. The top of the line model (Touring) has the best option of them all though, with capabilities of making 252 horsepower and a 2.0 litre four cylinder under the hood. This model also comes with a 10 speed automatic that shifts cleanly. Although both engines run smoothly, the 2.0 litre offers a surge of power that can spin the front tires in first gear easily. A hybrid model is also available, which is powered by a four cylinder gasoline engine and two electric motors.
The Accord’s chassis encourages the driver to push the car harder through corners where the car exhibits a minimal amount of body roll. Steering is light which is welcomed for this car as well as accurate and predictable. Overall, the Accord’s ride is firmly controlled yet not harsh, which helps it to secure the perfect balance between a sports sedan and a practical family car.
Interior and Comfort
If space is something you’ve always looked for in a vehicle – whether it’s for the front or rear passengers – then look no more, because the 2022 Honda Accord is the answer. It is actually very spacious and rear passengers are sure to be happy sitting in an Accord than any other mid size sedan. Now although cars are typically made with the driver in mind (and Honda is not an exception) the Accord thinks about everyone when it comes to comfort. Every Accord comes with elegant interior furnishings with the top Touring trim even being decked out with heated and cooled leather front seats, heated rear seats, and a head-up display. But Honda didn’t forget the lower trims. They feature attractive and comfortable cloth seats and interior trim.
And you can’t forget the cargo space. The Honda Accord has 17 cubic feet of cargo space and none of that space will be lost in the hybrid models as a result of its electric powertrain components. When put to the test, the regular Accord was able to fit 2 more carry-on bags (with the rear seat folded) than what could fit in its nearest competitor.
Then there’s the interior. The storage space is considered to be middle of the road in this class and the setup is actually not nearly as useful or well thought out as the Honda Civic or the Hyundai Ioniq. Despite all of this, the Accord meets the basic needs of most drivers.
Fuel Economy Rating and Real World MPG
For the real world MPG test, the Accord Touring 2.0T (with a 10 speed automatic transmission) was used and it actually out beat its own previous score, now with a rating of 35 mpg highway. It also did better than the 2018 Camry (with 301 horsepower and a V6 engine) which earned 29 mpg. The hybrid was also put to the test and was able to make 47 mpg combined (city and highway). The Fuel Economy Ratings can be found on the EPA’s website.
Infotainment and Connectivity
All models come standard with a touchscreen infotainment 8.0 inch display. Bluetooth and USB connectivity are also available on all models, and this includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities as well. The system is quick (in response time), attractive in the design of it, and easy to use, even for people who have no idea about technology – which a lot of people will like. On the EX-L model, Honda offers a 10 speaker premium audio system with a 450 watt amplifier. Lesser model Accords however, come equipped with either a 4 or 8 speaker system.
Safety and Driver Assistance Features
Seeing as Honda is a trusted brand across the nation for new families, it’s only fitting that the safety aspect is really where Honda shines. Every Accord comes standard with an array of driver-assistance features that include crash-avoidance technology, automated braking, and lane-keeping assist. This doesn’t mean anything else is standard though – features like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and parking sensors are all extra.
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
In comparison to its competitors (take Hyundai for example) Honda’s warranty coverage is decent. It does fall short of the class-leading coverage periods that Hyundai does provide, but you can’t have it all. The three points listed below are what Honda offers its customers:
- Limited warranty covers 3 years or 36,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty covers 5 years or 60,000 miles
- No complimentary scheduled maintenance
