Back by popular demand is the spotlight feature! This time we will be reviewing the 2024 Acura TLX. Acura released this model back in late November of last year, so I’m sure you’ve seen one or two (at least) on the roads by now. Honestly, if you were to ask me what my favourite thing about this car is, I would have to say the design. It has very sleek looking features and the car itself looks very defined and professional.
Starting at $46,195 for the base model, the TLX actually doesn’t come in too many more options for 2024. There’s the A-Spec (which is just above the base model and starts at $51,195) and the top of the line model Type S that starts at $58,195.
For the 2024 model year, Acura decided to give this car a refresh, well a mid-sized one if anything. The front bumper was redesigned but the most obvious change was the increased price tag of the new base model. The previous Entry-level TLX was removed for the 2024 line up…which is probably why the numbers jumped so significantly.
The rest of the line up sees new gauge cluster and infotainment screens, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto options being added. Two new paint options were added – Urban Grey Pearl and Liquid Carbon Metallic – and 3 new wheel options as well.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
For this section a couple different models information will be provided. Let’s start with the regular TLX, or the base model. This model features a 272 horsepower turbocharged 2.0 litre four cylinder engine under the hood with a 10 speed automatic transmission. Front wheel drive comes standard whereas Acura’s version of AWD, called SH-AWD, is optional. Now this isn’t different compared to any other model as it still functions the same – power is shuffled through the wheels to improve traction and agility.
The second model we will be looking at is the Type S. It comes equipped with a 355 horsepower turbo 3.0 litre V-6 engine, 10 speed automatic transmission, SH-AWD, and a sportier looking suspension. What makes this model different than the regular version is the 20 inch summer tires.
In the 0-60 MPH test, this model made it in 4.6 seconds whereas the Turbo four test car made it in 5.9 seconds.
Fuel Economy and Real World MPG
For the fuel economy and real world MPG, a couple different models were tested as well. The results are as follows:
- Front-drive TLX – 22 MPG city and 31 MPG highway
- Models equipped with SH-AWD – 21 MPG city and 29 MPG highway
- Type S – 19 MPG city and 25 MPG highway
- All wheel drive (4 cylinder) – 30 MPG city and highway
Please visit the EPA’s website for details on the fuel economy stats.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Every TLX comes equipped (standard) with a 12.3 inch infotainment system which is mainly controlled by a touchpad on the center console. There are buttons on the steering wheel that will allow you to control certain things as well as physical controls next to the touchpad too. It even features a padded resting place for your wrist below the touchpad to maximize comfortability. Also standard on the 2024 model is wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities. But if you want to be fancy, Acura has you covered with the Advanced package that features a wireless charging pad and ELS sound system.
Safety and Driver Assistance Features
The NHTSA (National Highway and Traffic Safety Act) gives the 2024 Acura TLX a 5 star overall safety rating. Every TLX comes standard with AcuraWatch which in itself comes with a lot. But what is it really? Basically it’s a range of driver assistance and collision avoidance technologies that Acura hopes will make roads safer for everyone. Click here to find out more.
It also features new equipment including traffic sign recognition and a driver awareness monitor as well as the listed items below:
- Standard forward collision warning and automated emergency braking
- Standard lane departure warning and lane keeping assist
- Available blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Acura is considered to be one of the best car companies for warranty and maintenance coverage. They provide one of the longest powertrain warranties on the market and their limited warranty matches its rivals (the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Mercedes G-Class).
- Limited warranty covers 4 years and 50,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty covers 6 years or 70,000 miles
- Complimentary scheduled maintenance is covered for 2 years or 24,000 miles
