5 of the Fastest Cars You Can Buy in Canada
In this week’s blog post we will be covering 5 of the fastest cars that can (legally) be bought in Canada. But first, I want to wish my Canadian readers a belated Happy Thanksgiving. I hope you all got the family time that you were looking for and enjoyed celebrating among those you love and care about. I can’t believe how fast the year is going by, before you know it, it’ll be Christmas! But I digress, so back to the real reason you’re reading this post – finding out how you can re-enact the Need for Speed movie of course!
Coming in at number 1 on the list is the Lucid Air Sapphire, clocking in at 205 MPH (330 km/hr). Now, if you’re unfamiliar with the brand, not to worry, it isn’t a common one seen on the roads like some of the other brands – yet. In fact, Lucid Motors is actually pretty new to the market, being founded in 2007. Similar to Tesla, it is an American automotive and technology company that makes and sells advanced electric vehicle powertrain systems, with its headquarters being located in Newark, California. Lucid also supplies and develops powertrain technology to other car companies interestingly enough, including Aston Martin.
The first car to ever be produced by Lucid Motors was called “Air”. The concept was announced in December 2016 but production wasn’t started until September 2021. The Sapphire model is actually the top of the line model for this vehicle so it makes sense that it comes with a pretty hefty price tag. Just for a comparison, the base model Air goes for around $71,400 whereas the top of the line model goes for $250,500 – what a jump I know!
But this is justified and this car, believe it or not, is actually considered to be a family car – it’s a 4 door sedan that features generous cargo space and can seat 5 fully grown adults. It makes 1,234 horsepower and 1,430 lb-ft of torque. The Lucid Air Sapphire is powered by a bank of 3 electric motors; one permanent magnetic synchronous AC motor in the front and two permanent magnetic synchronous AC motors in the rear – which is actually enough to keep up with a Ferrari 296 GBT. 2. McLaren 750S
Next on the list is the McLaren 750S with 206 MPH (332 km/hr). McLaren was founded in 1963 by a man named Bruce McLaren, who was determined to produce the company’s first race car within a year of opening – and actually achieved this. The car was called M1A and had 2 production years – 1963 and 1968. In total there were only 24 models produced, but still not a bad start. However, Bruce had bigger outlooks for this company which were seen almost immediately after the company was founded. It only took 2 years, but by 1965, the company had constructed its 1st ever Formula 1 entry which debuted at the Monaco Grand Prix.
After this, there were many successful years that followed but the company’s future was put in doubt in 1970 when Bruce was killed in a car accident. It was then that entrepreneur Teddy Mayer took over and led the team to their first World Constructors Championship in 1974. Fast forward a couple decades to 2017 and the 750S was born. It was assembled in Woking, Surrey, England, United Kingdom and is the second all new car in the McLaren super series replacing the 650S beginning in May 2017. The 750S was launched at the Geneva Motor Show on March 7, 2017 and is built on a modified carbon monocoque – making this the lightest and most powerful series production car ever. It features a twin turbo V8 engine under the hood that pairs with a 7 speed dual clutch automatic transmission. In the 0-60 MPH test, this car makes it in just 2.3 seconds.
But the price tag on one of these cars may be the only deterring reason when it comes to buying one. The 2025 base model starts at $318,085 and goes all the way up to $337,195. To find out more about the McLaren 750S, please visit McLaren’s official website linked here.
3. Mercedes Benz AMG GT 63 S E Performance
Taking the third spot on the list is the Mercedes Benz AMG GT 63 S E Performance (what a mouthful!) with 199 MPH (320 km/hr). Since I do have a whole blog post dedicated to a Mercedes Benz car (the EQS Sedan linked here) please refer to this for the brief history about the car company. And when you’re done reading through that post, make sure to come back to this one, I promise the other 2 cars will be just as interesting as the first 3 have been.
So we can get right into talking about this car. For starters, the price tag on one of these is actually…affordable, probably among the most affordable on this list. Mercedes goes to show that you really can have the best of both worlds – style and affordability – with their base price starting at $195,000. Not bad, I know. Under the hood, one will find a V8 engine that makes just over 600 horsepower (603 to be exact) and 627 lb-ft of torque. But this wasn’t enough for Mercedes engineers so they added a 201 horsepower electric motor just to give it something extra. This now gave the car a new ability – 804 horsepower and 1,047 lb-ft of torque.
Coming in at exactly 5000 lbs in overall weight, this Mercedes also takes the title of lightest car on the list so far – another bonus for the company. But this is still a lot for a 2 door sedan type of vehicle nonetheless. However, the weight is not an issue when it comes to handling and something that is easily forgotten when the driver is pushing the car to its limits – on an open race track (where it’s legal) of course.
4. Ferrari 12Cilindri (Type F 167)
The Ferrari 12Cilindri with 211 MPH (340 km/hr) is next on the list. Now again, please refer to the blog post linked here for some factual history surrounding Ferrari (and its connection to Ford) portrayed through the movie entitled “Ford vs. Ferrari”. A pretty great movie if you ask me, just really really long, but I digress, back to the topic at hand – the 12Cilindri. It is a 2 seater, front mid engine, rear wheel drive grand tourer that was introduced at Miami Beach earlier this year actually – May 3, 2024 – specially to coincide with Ferrari’s 70th anniversary in the American market.
It features a 6.5 litre naturally aspirated V12 engine under the hood and has an output of 819 horsepower, 500 lb-ft of torque. With a base price tag of $459,000 (and another model called Spider coming in at $505,400) it’s not hard to see why the automaker describes this as the “most complete GT it has ever made”.
The overall design of this vehicle has some serious inspiration taken from the 365GTB/4 Daytona and is perfect for long drives, but if you really want to experience some speed in this vehicle, push it to it’s limits and you’ll see exactly what this car can do – transforming into a supercar with impressive acceleration – a sports car at its finest moments.
5. Tesla Model S Plaid
Last but certainly not least on this list is the Tesla Model S Plaid with 200 MPH (321 km/hr). Tesla Motors is a company founded in July 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, but this is not to be confused with Tesla Inc – an American multinational automotive and clean energy company headquartered in Austin, Texas, where it produces, designs, and sells batteries for electric cars (among other things). Tesla Motors name actually is a tribute to the inventor and electrical engineer, Nikola Tesla.
This Tesla model features 3 permanent magnetic synchronous AC motors and comes in all wheel drive. It has an output of 1,020 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque, coming in slightly under when compared to the Lucid Air Sapphire reviewed at the beginning of the post. But Tesla released a Track Package that really unlocks this cars full potential. Among other things, the package includes a new set of carbon ceramic brakes and firmware updates that now give the car a 200 MPH top speed. It is this that helps this car truly compete with the other cars in its class.
Now all of this does come at a price, and the base model for this vehicle comes in at $103,990 and goes all the way up to $124,990 – new title champion on the list! For what it’s worth, Car and Driver Magazine does rate this vehicle an 8/10, whereas Edmunds gives it as 8.5/10 rating, and Driving.ca rates it at 4.5/5.
