5 of the Best Mid Size Luxury SUV’s for 2025

With 2025 coming to a racing end, I figured now would be the best time over any to publish this post. Everything nowadays feels like it’s so outrageously priced so don’t be fooled by the cars on this list thinking these are the only ones with higher prices. For this week’s post we will be writing about 5 of the Best Mid-Size Luxury SUVs for 2025 and now this is actually a quite fascinating read, if you ask me.

Coming in at number 1 on this list is the 2025 Genesis GV80. For its Canadian release, it came adorning a price tag of anywhere between $75,000 and $95,000. Some notably key features that were added for its 2025 release include a new grille, “Micro Lens Array headlamps” (taken from the G90 sedan), new wheel designs (20 and 22 inch options), a new colour choice for the exterior – Storr Green – coming in both matte and glossy finishes, a bigger 27 inch infotainment touchscreen, and 3 new interior colour choices – Earth Brown, Bordeaux Brown, and Glacier White. When it comes to the engine, there are a couple of different options you have to choose from. You can either opt for a 300 horsepower 2.5 litre four cylinder or a 375 horsepower 3.5 litre V6. Genesis admittedly did a really good job of making a car that features 3 rows feel athletic as it handles the corners quite successfully. It is described to provide a smooth overall ride as well as predictable handling and even offers the quietest ride at highway cruising speeds. Although, if you are looking for more of a thrill it would be recommended to go for either a Porsche Cayenne (which not surprisingly made it to this list) or an Audi SQ8.

The 2025 Genesis GV80 impressively also has the capability to tow up to 6000 lbs which out beats the Volvo XC90’s (another car that made it to the top 5 on this list) capacity of a maximum of 5000 lbs. Although its rival, the BMW X5 (keep reading to find out more on this car below), is still able to tow the most of all three cars with the capability of 6600 lbs or more. It does provide a quite slow turnaround time from 0-60 MPH however, making it there in 6.1 seconds with the V6 model making it in a slightly shorter time of 5.7 seconds. For the fuel economy ratings EPA estimates the four cylinder makes 19 MPG city and 24 MPG highway, losing 1 notch when compared to the 2024 model. The V6 model reduces those numbers even further to 16 MPG city and 22 MPG highway.

Number 2 on the list is the 2025 BMW iX. That’s right, the first electric vehicle on this list, quoted to be one of the best electric SUVs in the BMW showroom to date. The price for one of these is actually reasonable under the BMW logo, believe it or not, starting at $88,245. This is under the assumption of course that an average priced BMW SUV for 2025 ranges anywhere between the mid $40,000’s to a higher range of over $220,000 for the top of the line models. Car and Driver gives this car a 9.5/10 rating, falling just 0.5 short of the number 1 SUV listed above, although a common rating for BMW cars on this list apparently (keep reading to find out). The reason for the 0.5 point off can be related to either the style of the exterior, performance doesn’t match the price tag, and/or the interior leg room in the rear seats feeling cramped for long legged passengers.

For this electric vehicle, it comes available in two different options. The first being the xDrive50 that gets its power from a pair of electric motors that combined are able to produce 516 horsepower with all wheel drive as standard or the high performance option (also known as the M60), which is able to produce a jaw dropping 610 horsepower. Something that makes this car really cool, especially given the rarity of this feature being found on an electric SUV is the fact that it does come with an adjustable air suspension and a rear steering wheel system as optional on both variants of the car. Now when it comes to the range for this car, the numbers are actually quite impressive, even going beyond the average Canadian standard for what is considered good battery range (450-500 KM) with the ability to hold the charge for up to 521 KM thanks to the larger battery pack (105.2kWh). It does come with a DC fast charging component as standard and can recharge from 10% to 80% in just 35 minutes when connected to a 200kWh system. For the 0-60 MPH test, the xDrive50 model made it in an even 4 seconds whereas the M60 model made it in 3.2 seconds.

Fun Fact: BMW has partnered with a company called EVgo to provide a vast amount of public charging stations specifically for iX drivers, although it should be noted that the car can be charged through other popular networks, as well as the Level 2 home charging system

We have made it to number 3 on the list and not too hard to believe, it’s another BMW produced SUV. This time around it’s the X5. Now, for all you gearheads out there that know about this car, you will know it wasn’t all that long ago that BMW introduced the X5, with its official debut happening in 1999 and it was notably BMW’s first ever SUV. It even started out with the offering of either a manual or automatic gearbox. For its 2013 model release, a lot of changes were made including the introduction of more engine options. This was when a PHEV model was added as well through the xDrive40e model, which was powered by a turbocharged 4 inline engine. Fast forward to 2025 and not much has changed. It does come offering the choice between one of three distinctive powertrains each associated with a different model – sDrive40i or xDrive40i – are powered by a 375 horsepower inline six, the plug-in hybrid xDrive50e sees a turbocharged inline-six engine and an electric motor with the ability to produce 483 horsepower, and the M60 comes with a 523 horsepower twin-turbo V-8 engine. Not to mention upgraded technology that really struts its stuff for this vehicle. An optional highway assist hands free driving feature called the lane change assist system allows the driver to confirm a lane change suggested by the X5 by simply turning their eyes toward the corresponding rear view mirror. Cool right?

The price tag that one of these holds is actually one of the cheapest options on the list so far. For its 2025 release, the X5 price ranged from anywhere between $67,475 and $92,025. Highs and lows for this vehicle overall include a deluxe interior and advanced tech features (high) versus pricey twin turbo V8, doesn’t fit into BMW’s quick and light movement association, and it doesn’t offer a third row of seating like the iX does. For the 0-60 MPH test, 2 trims were tested, the xDrive40i which made it in 4.4 seconds and the M60 which out performed and made it in 3.6 seconds. When it comes to the safety and driver assistance features, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration actually knocks off one star from this car’s overall rating due to the fact that BMW offers the basic safety features as standard that include features like automated emergency braking and lane departure warning, which is actually common offerings across the 2025 BMW’s with the previously mentioned Highway Assist feature coming as optional.

Holding the 4th position on this list is the 2025 Porsche Cayenne. This car was given an impressive 9.5/10 rating like most of the other cars on this list and came adorning a price tag of anywhere between $86,695 and $205,795. Under the hood, you will find one of a couple of options, either a turbocharged V6 engine, a twin turbocharged V8 engine, or plug-in hybrid powertrains – a new trend more higher end car companies are hopping on. Believe it or not, and this is something people with a lot of money probably wouldn’t care too much about, but this car can actually be used as a daily coming equipped with a comfortable cabin, a generously sized cargo bay, and nothing short when it comes to the luxury and technology features. Luxury and excellence are two things that don’t come cheap and although adding the two previously mentioned features might be quite costly it can prove it’s worth in the end, especially the technology aspect. Now besides upgrades made to some of the performance aspects, a completely new model was added to the line up for 2025 – a 493 horsepower GTS model. This model comes standard with a Sport Design Package that adds a black exterior trim, dark bronze exhaust tips, and black wheels. To find out more about this new model, please visit Car and Drivers website linked here.

For its 2025 release, 7 different trim levels are available for purchase, however surprisingly the entry level Cayenne was the most popular choice to be opted for. It comes standard with a 12.3 inch touchscreen, a 10 speaker stereo system, and a Wi-Fi hotspot, among other popular equipment and going for the Premium Package also sees more. This includes features like, ambient interior lighting, adaptive cruise control, a more powerful Bose surround-sound system, heated front and rear seats, and a panoramic sunroof. As if this car needed anything more to be considered classy.

Last but not least on this list is the 2025 Volvo XC90. For its Canadian release it was priced at between $75,550 and $96,000. Volvo decided to completely redesign this car for 2025 but, and we know this might get confusing to follow, only for the 2025 models that were released after the first quarter. This included features such as revised front-end styling, a redesigned dashboard, updated interior materials, improved sound-deadening creating a quieter cabin, tweaked suspension tuning, and a new 11.2-inch infotainment display. For models released earlier in 2025 (before the first quarter) upgrades were also made to the previous year’s model which included the following: updated exterior styling, an improved and more user-friendly interior, and continued powertrain options including mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid systems.

Volvo made sure when going for this car, they left the consumer nowhere short of choices, giving them the option to choose from 12 different trims listed under the XC90 model name. Now a lot of marketing studies show that when the consumer feels overwhelmed they tend to back away from the brand and choose one that makes it a lot easier, but we want you to give this car a try if you’re interested so the choice we would recommend would definitely be going for the Plus trim level. This sees 7 seats in a bench seat layout and opting for the B6 version, gives the driver 295 horsepower, not much given the size of this SUV but it is something! It is important to note that all XC90 models come with all wheel drive and an 8 speed automatic transmission no matter what trim level or powertrain you opt for.

Final Thoughts

We have made it to the end of the blog post and it’s a bitter sweet moment to have just written the last article style post for this year. Not to worry we will be releasing one more post for 2025 (when the true reflective emotions will appear) but for now, why not check out a blog post we released a while ago in honour of Paul Walker’s death anniversary on November 30 linked here
