March Spotlight: Mercedes EQS Sedan

Mercedes Benz is a German luxury brand car company that was founded on June 28, 1926 by Karl Benz, Gottlieb Daimler, Wilhelm Maybach and Emil Jellinek – whose daughter is the original namesake for the company. Mercedes-Benz has 93 locations worldwide with their headquarters located in Stuttgart, Germany. The company is responsible for many of the technologies that exist today including the crumple zone (1959), the airbag (1980), and PRE-SAFE braking (2002) to name a few.

Ever since then, Mercedes has continued creating history one car at a time. From the world’s first automobile invented in 1886, to the first omnibus with a petrol engine invented in 1895, to the most recent edition – Electric vehicles – with many more accomplishments to their name in between of course.

So let’s get down to it. Introducing the all new 2022 Mercedes EQS Sedan. It should be no surprise that this car is making history yet again for the Mercedes name and this time it’s because it is the first Mercedes to use a platform exclusively designed for EV models. It’s also the first fully electric vehicle from the company’s EQ subbrand to be offered in the US market.

This is most definitely one of the fanciest electronic vehicles you will ever come across and the price tag on it stands to prove this. The base price of the car is $103,360 and can go all the way to $126,360. The standard version (EQS450+ Premium) makes 329 horsepower, 406 lb-ft of torque and is available in rear wheel drive. Under the hood or rather the trunk in Electric Vehicle cases, one will find a very large 107.8kWh battery that is able to reach 350 miles of range.

Design, Performance, and Power

The design of this car is worth talking about for so many different reasons. From the curvaceous outer body – allowing for maximum efficiency – to the state of the art features both interior and exterior – these both contribute to this car being considered a wow factor.

As if this car needed another reason to stand out, the optional glass-covered Hyperscreen dashboard is definitely an option worth looking into. This is the perfect element to finish off the look simply because of how elegant it makes the interior.

Mercedes estimates that the 0-60 test for the rear-wheel-drive cars will result in 5.5 seconds with the same test producing 4.1 seconds for the all-wheel-drive cars. Every EQS comes with an adaptive air suspension and rolls around on rims that range in size from 19 to 21 inches. A standard rear-axle-steering system allows for angling up to 4.5 degrees for the rear wheels, with an optional upgrade that can allow for 10 degrees of turn. This technology is intended to do both of the following: make the 205.4 inch long sedan easier to maneuver in tight spots and increase stability at high speeds. Based on test drives performed behind the wheel, the EQS features a quiet cabin and a smooth ride quality.

Charging, Battery Life, and Fuel Economy

Total charging time for the battery within the range of 10 to 100 percent is 11 hours and 15 minutes using a 240-volt (Level 2) charger. The EQS can supposedly replenish 70 percent of its battery (from 10 percent to 80 percent) within about 35 minutes using a DC fast charger. The official EPA fuel economy ratings are 97 city/highway.

Safety Features and Warranty/Maintenance Coverage

The 2022 EQS comes equipped with standard driver-assisted technology which includes: adaptive cruise control and self parking assist. Key safety features include the following:

  • Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Standard lane-depature warning and lane-keeping assist
  • Standard blind-spot monitoring

Mercedes offers limited and powertrain warranties that are competitive with other German automakers, but they aren’t really noteworthy. There is no complimentary maintenance, which is something BMW (also a German automaker) offers.

  • Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  • Electrical components are covered for 10 years or 155,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

Final Thoughts

This car is most definitely worth a look if you are interested in being environmentally friendly but have a quirk for luxury. Although the price for this particular vehicle seems a little outrageous, remember, you are not only paying for the Mercedes name, but also the pretty big battery that is powering it. I would recommend this car and with a C/D rating of 8.5/10 one couldn’t go wrong with making this purchase.
