Friday Feature: 2022 Acura NSX Type S – Giving the Supercar a New Definition

We made it to another Friday Feature! This time under review is another quite popular sports car, the Acura NXS Type S, specifically the 2022 model. This beast is guaranteed to be a real head turner on the road, but trust me when I say you will have to dive DEEP into those pockets if you want to fulfill the dream of owning one someday.

Overview

Introducing the all new 2022 Acura NXS Type S, the one set to redefine the word ‘supercar’ as we know it. With this beast only being offered in a limited quantity I would get yours as soon as possible – if it is still possible to get them where you live. Over the six-year span for variations made and seen in the NSX cars, production is being cut short for the Type S version. Why? Simply because of the disappointing stats coming from Acura for this vehicle. In five years, only 2548 cars were sold globally. This car is definitely one of the most underrated and underappreciated performance cars on the market, but as they say, ‘you don’t know how good you have it till it’s gone.’

Ever since its initial release date, the NSX has been struggling to shine in the spotlight. However, to commemorate its final production, a special 600 horsepower Type S edition (Standard) is being generated with only 350 cars being produced.

What’s New for 2022?

Given the fact that this year is the last year of production for this car, Acura decided to really make it a memorable release. The NSX will be decked out with a Type S badge, along with a souped up powertrain and tweaked front-end styling.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

This car has that race car vibe in every aspect to it – visually, statistically, performance wise, etc – with the ability to function as a daily car. The NSX Type S is powered by a twin-turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 24-valve 3.5 litre V-6 engine. It makes 520 horsepower and reaches 0-100 speeds in 2.7 seconds!

It comes equipped with an electric-only Quiet mode and a Sports mode, both allowing for direct and accurate steering with light to the touch feels. In Sports Plus and Track modes, the electric-power-steering system dials in more weight.

The V6, 9 speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and one of the electric motors work together to power the rear wheels. The other two electric motors operate independently to drive the front wheels, working as a collective unit to make this car operate as an all-wheel-drive.

Fuel Economy and Real World MPG

Hybrid vehicles are more efficient in stop-and-go traffic than a gas powered or an electric one and the NSX proves to be no different. The NSX Type S has an EPA rating of 21 mpg/city, 22 mpg/highway, and 21/mpg combined.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The 2022 Acura NSX Type S comes equipped with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system hooked up to an ELS Studio 9 speaker stereo. The problem (for some and not others) is the system’s interface looks outdated and the menu setup is said to be unintuitive. To make matters worse, it lacks redundant buttons and has an oversized touch-sensitive volume slider, making precise adjustments difficult and adds an extra layer of complexity, for no reason other than to add to the interior look of the car.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Right off the bat, let’s start with the ONLY safety and driver assistance feature that this car has: Standard front-and-rear parking systems. The lack of safety features can be a big concern to some, and honestly, I want to say that I am right there with you. Sure it does have a standard airbag system which provides an acceptable level of protection, but this is for sure one area that Acura needs to spend more time in if they want more sales in the future.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Acura is a company that stands behind its vehicles in every aspect you can think of. In comparison to Acura’s competitors – Audi, BMW, Porsche – nobody provides more powertrain coverage than Acura.

  • Hybrid-electric components are covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles
  • Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers 6 years or 70,000 miles

Final Thoughts

From the moment I saw this car, I fell in love with it visually. After doing a mini dive into the ins and outs of it, I still do love it, I just wish Acura did a lot more in terms of safety. The price for this car starts at $169,500 making it pretty difficult for just about anyone and everyone to get one, and personally, I haven’t seen this car on the roads over here in Canada, making it a really rare find. But this shouldn’t discourage any purchases you want to make for an Acura vehicle. Acura stands behind their cars and that’s what makes them unique. I would recommend buying this car (while you can) because trust me, rare is beautiful.
